The standard gate remote has been around for decades and it does its job well — but it has one obvious limitation. It only works when you're in range. If you're away from the property and a delivery needs to get through, or a tradesperson needs access, or a family member has forgotten their remote - you're stuck.

GSM gate controllers solve that problem. They connect your gate motor to the mobile phone network, which means you can open, close, and monitor your gate from anywhere with a phone signal, which in practice means anywhere in Australia.

Here's how they work, what the different options look like, and what to check before you add one to an existing system.

How GSM gate control works

A GSM controller is a small module that connects to your gate's control board and contains a SIM card. To open the gate remotely, you send a command — usually a phone call or an SMS — to the SIM card's number. The module receives the signal and triggers the control board input, just as if someone had pressed the open button on a wall-mounted switch.

The elegance of this approach is its simplicity. On most GSM controllers, a missed call from an authorised number is enough to trigger the gate — no app to download, no internet connection required, no complicated setup. If you can make a phone call, you can open the gate.

GSM vs WiFi vs Bluetooth — what's the difference?

GSM controllers

Operate over the mobile phone network. Range is essentially unlimited — you can trigger the gate from the other side of the world as long as the SIM has signal. They require a SIM card with an active plan (data-only or voice SIMs from any Australian carrier work). No home internet or WiFi is needed, which makes them particularly useful for rural properties or sites where internet connectivity is unreliable.

WiFi controllers

Connect to your home or business WiFi network and typically pair with a dedicated app on your phone. They offer more features than basic GSM units — access logs, real-time status, timed schedules, multiple user management — and don't require a separate SIM. The limitation is range: they only work when both the controller and your phone are connected to the internet. If the WiFi goes down, so does remote access.

Pedestrian mode

Pedestrian mode allows the gate to open partially — typically one-quarter to one-third of its full travel — for foot traffic, without opening the full width. On a wide sliding gate, this avoids a 10-second full open cycle every time someone walks through. It's a small feature that makes a big difference on busy sites.

Obstruction detection sensitivity

All modern boards include motor current monitoring for obstruction detection — when the motor encounters resistance, the board stops and reverses the gate. The sensitivity of this detection is usually adjustable. On a heavy gate in cold weather, the motor draws more current just to move the gate, so the sensitivity may need to be dialled back to avoid false triggers. On a lighter gate, higher sensitivity is appropriate.

External device integration

More sophisticated boards allow integration with intercoms, magnetic locks, boom gates, and building management systems. For commercial installs especially, it's worth checking what the board can and can't integrate with before you commit to a product. Retrofitting a different board because the original one couldn't talk to the intercom is an avoidable problem.

What you can do with a GSM controller

Beyond basic open and close, most GSM controllers support:

  • Authorised number lists — only calls or messages from approved numbers trigger the gate, so you're not relying on security through obscurity
  • Temporary access — add a number for a tradesperson or guest and remove it when they're done
  • SMS notifications — receive a message when the gate is opened, useful for monitoring access to a rental property or commercial site
  • Status checking — send an SMS to check whether the gate is currently open or closed
  • Timer functions — schedule the gate to close automatically at a set time

What to check before adding GSM to an existing system

The most important compatibility check is whether your existing control board has a free input terminal that the GSM module can trigger. Most modern boards do — it's typically the same terminal used for a push-button or keypad. But older or proprietary boards can be different, so it's worth confirming before you order.

You'll also need a SIM card. A basic prepaid voice or data SIM from any Australian carrier works — the controller uses minimal data or call credit. Some installers set up a dedicated SIM on a low-cost plan; others use an existing account with a spare number.

Finally, check mobile signal strength at the gate location. On most metropolitan and suburban properties this is a non-issue. On rural properties or sites in valleys or areas with patchy coverage, it's worth checking which carrier has the best signal at that specific location before choosing a SIM.

A strong upsell on any new automation install

For installers, GSM control is one of the most straightforward upsells on a gate automation job. The hardware cost is modest, the installation is simple, and the value to the client is immediately obvious — especially once you demonstrate opening the gate from your own phone during the site visit.

Most homeowners who see it in action want it. And once it's installed, it's one of those features they wonder how they lived without.
