If a gate motor is the muscle of an automated gate system, the control board is the brain. It receives signals from remotes, keypads, safety beams, and loop detectors — and it tells the motor what to do with them. It manages open and close timing, handles obstruction detection, controls lighting outputs, and coordinates multiple motors on double-leaf gates.

Most installers know the control board well. But for anyone new to gate automation — or anyone trying to understand why a system isn't behaving the way it should — a clear picture of what the board actually does and how it's configured is genuinely useful.

The basics: what a control board does

A gate control board receives inputs and produces outputs. In simple terms:

  • Inputs: signals from remotes, keypads, push buttons, safety beams, loop detectors, and timer modules
  • Outputs: commands to the motor (open, close, stop), signals to lights, and triggers to ancillary devices like intercoms or magnetic locks

When you press a remote button, the receiver picks up the radio signal and sends a trigger to the control board. The board checks the current gate state — is it open, closed, or mid-travel? — and responds accordingly. Most boards operate on a step-by-step logic: first trigger opens, second trigger stops, third trigger closes, fourth trigger stops again.

That's the basic loop. Everything else — timer-to-close, pedestrian mode, leaf sequencing, partial opening — is additional logic built on top of that foundation.

Key features to look for when speccing a board

Compatibility with your motor

This is non-negotiable. Control boards are not universally interchangeable. A board designed for a 24V DC sliding gate motor is not compatible with a 240V AC operator without significant modification — and some motor brands have proprietary board architectures. Always confirm compatibility before ordering.

Number of channels

A single-channel board controls one motor — suitable for a single sliding gate or a single-leaf swing gate. A dual-channel board controls two motors, which is what you need for a double-leaf swing gate where the two leaves need to be synchronised. Some boards offer additional channels for ancillary outputs like lights, locks, or pedestrian gates within a larger system.

Timer-to-close

A timer-to-close function automatically closes the gate after a set period — useful for commercial sites, rental properties, or anywhere you can't rely on someone to manually close the gate. The timer is usually adjustable from a few seconds to several minutes. Most modern boards include this as standard; it's worth confirming it's present and configurable.

Pedestrian mode

Pedestrian mode allows the gate to open partially — typically one-quarter to one-third of its full travel — for foot traffic, without opening the full width. On a wide sliding gate, this avoids a 10-second full open cycle every time someone walks through. It's a small feature that makes a big difference on busy sites.

Obstruction detection sensitivity

All modern boards include motor current monitoring for obstruction detection — when the motor encounters resistance, the board stops and reverses the gate. The sensitivity of this detection is usually adjustable. On a heavy gate in cold weather, the motor draws more current just to move the gate, so the sensitivity may need to be dialled back to avoid false triggers. On a lighter gate, higher sensitivity is appropriate.

External device integration

More sophisticated boards allow integration with intercoms, magnetic locks, boom gates, and building management systems. For commercial installs especially, it's worth checking what the board can and can't integrate with before you commit to a product. Retrofitting a different board because the original one couldn't talk to the intercom is an avoidable problem.

A note on programming

Most control boards are programmed via DIP switches, a keypad on the board itself, or — increasingly — a PC interface or app. The programming process covers things like travel limits (how far the gate opens and closes), timing delays, sensitivity settings, and remote code learning.

Getting the programming right on commissioning is important. A gate that's slightly over-travelling on every cycle, or one whose motor is running at the wrong current limit, will wear out faster than it should. Take the time to set it up properly on installation.

Common board-related issues and what causes them

  • Gate reverses immediately after starting — safety beam is blocked or misaligned; check beam alignment before anything else
  • Gate won't respond to remote — remote frequency not matched to receiver, or remote needs reprogramming to the board
  • Double-leaf gate leaves out of sync — leaf sequencing settings need adjustment, or one motor is running slightly slower than the other
  • Timer-to-close triggering too early or too late — timer setting needs adjustment; check the board's programming guide
  • Gate stops mid-travel — obstruction detection sensitivity too high, or a genuine obstruction; check both
